The Training (Subclass 407) visa is temporary employer sponsored visa valid for up to two years. It allows an individual to complete workplace-based occupational training activities to improve their skills for their job, area of tertiary study, field of expertise, or in a professional development training program in Australia.
The 407 visa has three streams including occupational training that is:
- required for registration;
- to enhance skills in an eligible occupation; or
- for capacity building overseas, including three sub-categories including overseas qualification, government support or professional development.
What documents are required for a 407 application?
A 407 application involves the following three application stages, each with their own requirements:
- Temporary Activity Sponsorship (TAS) where the employer applies for permission to sponsor employees for certain visas (subclass 403, 408, and 407). A TAS generally lasts for 5 years from the date of approval, and some employers may already have a valid TAS;
- Nomination where the employer nominates the position with their organisation and the nominee to fill the position; and
- Visa where the applicant demonstrates they meet the requirements for a 407 visa.
Checklists for the documents required at each of these stages are provided below. Please note that these are general checklist, and further documents and information may be required in the specific circumstances of each application.

Workplace-based Training Plan
A key component of a 407 application is to prepare a workplace-based training plan which needs to be structured and specifically tailored to the training needs of the applicant. Except for in limited circumstances, all of the workplace-based training must be provided by the sponsor, and the plan should:
- outline training objectives;
- include an assessment of the nominated trainee’s current level of skill in the identified occupation;
- include a training needs analysis and training pathway (task components with timeframes for completion);
- outline how training will be monitored and assessed (with details of all supervisors, trainers and assessors, and their qualifications and experience); and
- comprise at least 30 hours a week of training;
- comprise at least 70 percent of training in the workplace (i.e. not in a classroom or similar teaching environment); and
- clearly differentiate between periods of practical work experience and periods of instruction and/or observation.
We generally recommend structuring a training plan in at least three-month blocks, with each period focusing on the:
- responsibilities and main duties the applicant will be partaking in;
- expected learning outcomes and skills which the applicant should develop; and
- methods of assessment.
