core skills occupation list

On 3 December 2024, the Australian Government announced the release of the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), which is to apply to the upcoming Skills in Demand (SID) visa. See announcement here.

The SID visa has been expected to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Subclass 482 visa in “late 2024”, and it now appears that this will occur on 7 December 2024. You can see an article on what we know about the SID visa so far here.

What is the Skills in Demand visa?

The SID visa will be the work visa to Australia, being a temporary employer sponsored visa for up to 4 years, with pathways to permanent residency via the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Subclass 186 visa.

It will replace the TSS visa but looks to retain many of the same features (including subclass number i.e. Subclass 482 visa).

There will be three streams under the new SID visa, with the “Core Skills” stream expected to represent what we know of the TSS visa. The CSOL will apply to occupations sponsored under the “Core Skills” stream.

CSOL

The full CSOL list can be found here with which there are 456 occupations.

Of the 40 occupations which have not been included, some of the occupations which were sponsorable under the TSS program, but will no longer be sponsorable under the Core Skills Pathway of the SID visa include:

  1. Market Research Analyst
  2. Industrial Designer
  3. Biotechnologist
  4. Safety Inspector
  5. ICT Trainer
  6. Customer Service Manager

What if my occupation is not on the CSOL?

If you have an occupation that is being removed from the CSOL, you may need to either lodge a new TSS visa now to extend your stay, or seek appropriate advice.

If your occupation is not on the CSOL, you may still be eligible for the SID visa under the “Specialist Skills” stream. This stream has no occupation list, but requires the nominee to have earnings of at least $135,000.
