The General Points Test set out a myriad of attributes which are assessed by the Department of Home Affairs when considering visa applications for general skilled migration visas (which include Skilled Independent – Subclass 189, Skilled Regional Provisional – 489, Skilled Nominated – Subclass 190 and Permanent Residence Skilled Regional – Subclass 191 visas).
The minimum pass marks to enter the “pool” of skilled migrant applications is 65 points. However, in practicality, the minimum points required to actually be invited to apply for the visa depend on the quality of the pool of the applicants. For example, for invitations issued on 11 October 2019, the minimum points required for an invitation under the Subclass 189 visa was 80 points.

Hi,
For Victorian 190 invitation, can a PHD student who is doing her PhD in one of the target sectors apply? She has done her masters in similar field and doing the PhD with full scholarship and earning money from the PhD. Can it be considered as a job to apply for Vic 190 nomination?
Thanks
Hi Ashad,
As it stands, you require a job (and employment contract) for the Vic 190 so a scholarship is not considered employment in itself. However, if she has an employment contract for research work then she can certainly consider an ROI.
Kind regards,
Hannan Tew
