How do I apply for a fast tracked Global Talent visa? (updated: 20 May 2024)

global talent scheme

On 4 November 2019, the Global Talent Independent (GTI) program was officially launched to provide a streamlined, priority pathway for highly skilled and talent individuals to obtain Australian permanent residency.

This program is another layer of the “Global Talent” initiative that the Department of Home Affairs (Department) have rolled out to support innovation in Australia, which joins the renamed “Global Talent – Employer Sponsored” (GTES) scheme. You can read a general summary of these two schemes here.

As part of the 2024/25 federal budget, the Australian government announced that while there will still be 4,000 spots for this program, it will be replaced by the “National Innovation” visa. Please see further information about this visa here.

What is the Global Talent – Independent program?

The GTI program is designed to attract skilled migrants at the top of specific key sectors to Australia. It operates through an additional layer on top of an existing visa – being the Global Talent (Subclass 858) visa (discussed further below).

The GTI program involves the Department taking on a more active role by engaging “Global Talent Officers” (GTO) in key locations overseas to invite targeted individuals to apply for an Australian visa. GTOs will work with countries in their regions and attend key events/expos to promote this program.

Individuals interested in this program, should submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with the Department of Home Affairs (Department) to be invited to apply for this visa. A successful candidate will receive a unique identifier and be invited to apply for a Global Talent visa. For the:

  • 2019/20 migration programme year – there were 5,000 spots;
  • 2020/21 migration programme year – there were 15,000 spots;
  • 2021/22 migration programme year – there were 15,000 spots;
  • 2022/23 migration program year – there were 5,000 spots;
  • 2023/24 migration program year – there are 5,000 spots; and
  • 2024/25 migration program year – there will be 4,000 spots for it’s final year (see here) before being replaced by the “National Innovation” visa.

In particular, the Department aim to target individuals with profiles relevant to the following 10 sectors (set out in Direction 89) (see below).

The Department are also looking to target certain student cohorts with research that is internationally recognised and relevant to those targeted industries, including those who have recently (in the last 3 years) completed a PhD.

What is a Global Talent visa?

The Global Talent visa aims to attract individuals who have an “internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement” in either a profession, sport, the arts, or academia and research. The GTI program utilises the “profession” or “academic and research” aspects of this visa.

It also requires the applicant to still be prominent in the area, be an asset to the Australian community, demonstrate that they’d have no difficulty in obtaining employment (or being established independently) in the area, and be nominated by either an Australian individual or organisation with a national reputation in the area.

You can read more about the Global Talent visa here.

Am I eligible under this program?

Broadly speaking, to be eligible under this program, a candidate must:

  • fit under one of the 10 targeted sectors outlined above; and
  • have an “internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement” in their field, and either:
    • be able to attract a salary equivalent to the Fair Work High Income Threshold (FWHIT), currently AUD $175,000; or
    • have completed their PhD in the past 3 years (degree conferred).

If you do not satisfy the above, you would not be eligible under this program. Please note that being eligible is not necessarily the same as being likely to receive an invitation given the highly competitive nature of the program, which has increased due to the growing popularity and awareness as well as the reduce allocations.

What are the 10 target sectors?

Though we are not aware of any official definition of the 10 target sectors, Direction 89 represents a departure from the original 7 target sectors which largely related to “Tech”. This broadening moves away from that “Tech” emphasis and more into the Department’s other priority sectors.

Examples of relevant skill sets to the target sectors include the following:

Resources

Engineering, Geology, Metallurgy, Waste Management, Energy Saving Technology, Extraction and Processing

Agri-food and AgTech

Seed technology, nanomaterials, biofuels, supply chain and packaging, wearable technologies

Energy

Clean energy, resource robotics, computational metallurgy, geostatistics, beneficiation, battery / energy storage

Health Industries

Medical and biomedical technology, pharmaceutical and vaccine research and development, IT biochemistry, digital health, implantables and wearable devices, genomics

Defence, Advanced Manufacturing and Space

Astrodynamics, satellite systems, rocket and avionics systems, urban mobility, military equipment acquisition and sustainment, automation and robotics, nano-manufacturing, sustainable manufacturing and life-cycle engineering

Circular Economy

Bioenergy, sustainable production, recycling, waste treatment, waste to energy technology, emissions technology, ecologically sustainable manufacturing

DigiTech

Quantum computing, cyber sciences, cyber security, artificial intelligence, blockchain, IoT, big data, disruptive technologies, smart cities, machine learning, network engineering, cloud computing

Infrastructure

Water infrastructure, Energy infrastructure, regional development

Tourism

Travel and tourism infrastructure

Financial Services and FinTech

Neobanking, payment systems, wealth and regtech, blockchain

Education

Cutting edge skills in emerging fields of the industry, developing advanced educational systems and curricula, improving the education infrastructure in Australia, digital data and eResearch platforms

You can read more about relevant skill sets to these target sectors and specialisations that the Department aim to prioritise here.

How do I apply?

To access one of the 5,000 positions under the GTI for priority processing, there are three steps:

  1. the unique identifier and code issued by the Department
  2. a nomination and
  3. the Global Talent visa application itself.

Presently, to be considered under the GTI program, you would need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) here directly to the Department. You will need to have a nominator at this time, you can read some information about the Form 1000 and the nomination process here.

In our view, your GTI EOI should submit a covering letter, a CV, and evidence of your claimed achievements.

Once the referral has been assessed, the Department would email the candidate a unique identifier number and code to make the Global Talent visa application and be considered under the GTI provisions.

Although the application form may now be completed online, the Form 1000 (which has to be completed by the nominator) is still a paper-based form that then needs to be scanned and uploaded.

Your nominator must complete this form, and they must be an:

    • Australian Citizen/PR/eligible NZ Citizen; or
    • Australian organisation

who has a “national reputation” in relation to the area.

The nomination process is basically an endorsement of your skills, rather than a “sponsorship” with attached obligations (other than to tell the truth of course). You can read more about the nomination and the Form 1000 requirements here.

    We recommend:

    • reviewing your nominator profile to ensure that they have a “national reputation” before asking them to assist;
    • sending the Form 1000 to your nominator when you first ask them to assist to ensure they’re comfortable with what’s on the form.

Both of these steps are to save an awkward conversation down the line.

The key criteria is being able to demonstrate that you have an “internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement” in your field. This is to distinguish “ordinary” individuals.

The successful individuals with whom Hannan Tew Lawyers have advised and assisted have: received awards/media coverage of their work, made publications (general/academic), hold patents, spoken at conferences, and/or have held senior positions at international companies.

The visa applicant must also be of good health and character, which means that police clearances and health examinations must be provided/undertaken.

    How much does it cost?

The government lodgement fees for this application are:

    Primary ApplicantEssential

    $ 4,840

How long will it take to receive an outcome on my EOI?

The pathway of obtaining priority processing via GTO referral has ceased. The Department’s website for the GTI program no longer lists GTO email addresses, and specifically states that “Departmental officers (formerly known as Global Talent Officers) no longer provide individual support to candidates”.

Practically, this means where it was previously possible to obtain EOI outcomes in 1 month or less for high profile candidates, all applicants will now be subject to “standard” processing times. As at the time of writing, the Department are currently processing EOIs in about 3-6 months.

The Department have indicated that certain individuals who are endorsed by “Whole of Government partners” may be supported in exceptional cases.

What is the impact of Direction 100?

On 28 October 2022, the Department issued Direction No. 100 which outlines the order of consideration of skilled visas, including Global Talent visas (see here).

This sets out the order of priority for certain visas, and gives the highest priority to applications in relation to a healthcare or teaching occupation.

Within the list of priority, it also gives the highest priority to visa applications:

    1. where the primary applicant is located outside Australia at the time the visa application is made; and
    2. made by Hong Kong nationals.

How can we engage Hannan Tew Lawyers?

There are two ways to engage us, there are routes that can be taken:

    1. undertake an initial consultation to discuss your circumstances, and for us to provide advice and options. A fee of $330-440 is applicable which consist of a 1 hour discussion followed by written advice. This is if you want to discuss your circumstances further, get an idea as to process, confirm eligibility, and ask any other questions you may have. You can view our availability and book in a time convenience for you here; or
    2. if you are confident about eligibility and do not want the consultation and advice, we can go ahead and prepare a GTI EOI application for you for $5,500. However, if we later found that you were not eligible for the visa, we would only be able to refund that amount less the time already spent on your matter.

What is the process once we engage you?

In the first instance, we would need to send over our cost agreement (CA) outlining our fees, scope of services and terms and conditions of engagement for your review.

If you were happy with the contents, we would ask that you sign the document and deposit the professional fees upfront into our trust account. Your funds would remain in trust until your GTI EOI was lodged after which we’d issue an invoice and move the funds from trust in payment of our invoice.

Upon receipt of the signed CA and deposit, we would send a template statement, reference letters and a list of documentation required. A significant part of our services involve the drafting of the cover letter which we’d send for your review, and work together to finalise . We also review all documentation (including reference letters prior to signature), and make suggestions of what documents to include or not include.

We submit the GTI EOI as your appointed legal representatives and all correspondence related to your GTI EOI should be directed to us (with which we would of course update you).

    Common mistakes?

Having spoken to hundreds of prospective applicants and assisted numerous individuals through both the GTI Expression of Interest (EOI) and the Global Talent visa application itself, you can read about some of the most common mistakes we have found by EOI applicants here.

    Frequently asked Questions

Hannan Tew Lawyers have had a significant amount of queries from individuals both at EOI and at visa application stage. This means that we’ve noticed a trend of common queries, which we’re happy to share with you.

What were the 14 November 2020 changes to the Global Talent visa?

On 14 November 2020, the Department passed legislation that removed the offshore Subclass 124 visa and made some major amendments to the onshore Global Talent Subclass 858 visa application. You can read a summary of these changes here.

What were the 20 January 2021 changes to the GTI program and EOI eligibility?

From 20 January 2021, Bachelor (with Honours) and Masters graduates are no longer eligible for invitation to the GTI program on the basis of those qualifications alone. This replaces older guidelines which considered applicants who:
    1. were recent Masters or Honours graduates (who completed their studies in the last 3 years);
    2. had obtained a WAM of at last 80% or more; and
    3. the course was directly related to the relevant target sector.

These individuals were also considered to have the ability to attract the Fair Work High Income Threshold (FWHIT) requirements.

The Department have advised that the new changes apply “regardless of the date you submitted your EOI”, meaning it applies to existing EOIs which have already been submitted.

That is not to say that recent Masters or Bachelors (Honours) graduates should not apply, but that they must also demonstrate international recognition outside of their academic achievements in order to receive an invitation.

Note that candidates in the above cohort who received an invitation reference identifier prior to 20 January 2021 will still be eligible to lodge an application for a Distinguished Talent (subclass 858) visa with priority processing.

What were the 27 February 2021 changes to the Global Talent visa?

On 27 February 2021, the Distinguished Talent visa was renamed the Global Talent visa.  The Subclass and criteria remained the same.

I am a PhD Graduate, am I likely to be invited?

Our experience has been that the Department have a strong preference for PhD graduates who:
    • are undertaking research that is highly novel and/or can be commercialised; and/or
    • have demonstrated employability (i.e. securing a postdoctoral position and/or a job in the industry).

As a PhD graduate the strength of your application lies in your research quality. Having secured employment is strong evidence that your research is valued as either further funding is flowing to support that research, or a commercial business is seeking to apply your research. .

Do I get an acknowledgement after submitting my EOI?

Once you select “Submit”, an acknowledgement message will be displayed. You will not receive an email confirming that your EOI has been received. The Department will be in contact to either request further information/documents from you, or issue you a unique identifier.

How long does it take to get a response from my EOI?

See the section above – the general answer is that it varies and unfortunately, the Department do not publish their processing times. Presently, we’ve been receiving outcomes in about 3 months.

Does the Department advise me if my EOI is unsuccessful?

The Department have indicated that they will advise EOI applicants whether they were successful or not. Please see our interview with a Global Talent Officer on this point here. This has also been our experience.

What if I don’t meet one of the 10 targeted sectors?

The GTI program is specifically to target people in those sectors. If you clearly do not meet these sectors, then this program is not for you. However, there are many instances where an individual may meet one of these sectors without realising it. Feel free to reach out to us if you think you that you may be a candidate but are unsure as to whether you meet one of the sectors.

How do I know if I am a “distinguished talent”?

This is quite a subjective assessment. Consider whether you have had significant academic or professional accomplishments that are not in the “ordinary” course, look at what we’ve described above as successful candidates who have received EOIs. Feel free to reach out to us if you think you may be such a candidate, but are unsure as to whether you might qualify.

How do I find a nominator?

This is the most common question we receive from offshore EOI applicants and the answer depends on your personal circumstances. It could be your employer, an industry colleague, an academic colleague, or even an industry body. Various skills assessing authorities also now offer this service including the ACS, Engineers Australia, Institute of Managers and Leaders, and the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists. You can apply for these before submitting your EOI.

Do you assist with finding a nominator?

Where engaged to assist with the GTI EOI or Global Talent visa, we provide recommendations based on an individual’s profile. However, we do not source a nominator for you.

What are the requirements for the nominator?

The criteria to be a nominator is set out above and we have  written an article that helps explains what this means for them here. The nominator will need to provide the Form 1000 and some evidence to demonstrate that they have a “national reputation” in the same field as you.

If I receive a unique identifier, does this guarantee that my Distinguished Talent visa application will be granted?

No, it does not. You still need to meet all the criteria for grant of the actual visa, including health and character clearances.

How long is the processing time for the Global Talent visa itself?

Most applications are finalised in 9-12 months, largely depending on how complete the application is (i.e. whether documents were missing) and availability to undertake health examinations.

I’ve received a unique identifier, but I have family members (spouse/partner, children) outside Australia. What do I do?

On 14 November 2020, the Department merged both the offshore (Subclass 124) and onshore (Subclass 858) Distinguished Talent visas into one visa subclass – the Subclass 858 visa. Amendments were made such that applicants may be either inside or outside of Australia at time of lodgement. This was later renamed the Global Talent visa.

I’m in Australia as the holder of a Bridging Visa pending an outcome on a further substantive visa. Can I apply for the Global Talent visa?

Yes. On 14 November 2020, the Department merged both the offshore (Subclass 124) and onshore (Subclass 858) Distinguished Talent visas into one visa subclass – the Subclass 858 visa (and later named the Global Talent visa). These changes also now allow applicants to apply onshore so long as they hold either a substantive visa, or a Bridging Visa A, B, or C.

What is the impact of Direction No. 89 and the target sectors?

On 17 December 2020, the Department issued Direction No. 89 which outlines the order of consideration of the Global Talent visa.  Relevantly, it listed out revised target sectors. You can read a summary of the differences between the old target sectors (largely focused on tech) and the new, existing target 10 target sectors here.

Will the government extend the Global Talent Independent program?

The Department has set 4,000 positions for the 2024/25 migration program year, indicating that this is the last year before it is replaced with the “National Innovation” visa. This number represents a slight decrease from 5,000 spots the year before, confirming their intention to leave this as a “niche” pathway for very strong candidates. The program is in high demand, so we encourage eligible applicants to apply as soon as possible to take advantage of the positions.

    Conclusion

With immigration uncertainty in other countries, the Global Talent Independent program is a positive initiative to try and attract some of the best and brightest talent from around the world.

Hannan Tew Lawyers have had a significant amount of enquiries about the GTI program, and have been at the forefront of this program since conception (see discussion comments below for example).

We have been interviewed by various media outlets including ITnews, and SBS regarding our insights and views on the GTI program, and on our insights on immigration more broadly which can be read here. We have also delivered sold out CPD sessions via industry bodies to educate other Migration Agents / Lawyers on this program.

With significant experience advising the tech and start-up industries in Australia, we have the knowledge and experience to understand your profile and convey the importance of your research, experience and skill sets to the Department to improve your prospects of receiving an invitation and/or the visa itself.

Please feel free to contact us by email at [email protected] or phone +61 3 9016 0484 if you have further comments or would like some guidance.

      Hi Hannan,

Could you please advise the estimated waiting period from EOI submission to UID invitation based on your experience?

      Many thanks!

        Hi Mike,
It depends, but we find on average current decisions have been made between 6-9 months after lodgement.
        Kind regards,

I’m very enthusiastic about every of your responses. My wife submitted her EOI application for GTIvisa on March 25th with form 1000, her profile: She has published over 60 journal articles(42 main and corresponding author) in reputable journals, 9 conference papers, 4 book chapters; 2 exhibition award, 2 scholarship awards; her Google scholar citations is now 1050. She is currently working as Research officer and her salary far below the salary threshold. She has not received any response. Did she has chance to get uid to apply for the GTIvisa?

          • admin says:

            Hi John,
It depends on her circumstances, but that looks like a good profile.
If she didn’t complete her PhD in the last 3 years, be sure to provide evidence of an ability to earn at above the FWHIT in Australia.
            Good luck,
            Hannan Tew

        Hi Jay,
If your visa is rejected you will have issues going forward (e.g. s48 if you are onshore).
If your EOI is rejected your other visa options will not be impacted (unless you provide false or misleading information).
        Kind regards,

      Hi Hannan,
I got a question to ask.
After responding to s56 request, I got an invoice for 2nd VAC. I was planning to pay at a later time, since the timeframe to pay it is 70 days.
Weirdly, I got the visa granted before I have paid for it.
I am a little confused now. Does this mean that I do not have to pay the invoice? Which email address of the home affairs should I use to discuss about it?
      Thanks.

      • SK says:

        Hi Lily
You have a different experience with it. I have expressed our intention to pay for the 2nd VAC two weeks ago, but have not got the invoice for the same and the status is still in further assessment. I am desperately waiting for the invoice so that I can make the payment.
        Thanks
        SK

        • Lily says:

          Hi SK
you should receive the invoice soon.
In my experience, there was also a two week waiting period between my response and receiving the invoice.
          Good luck.

          Hi Lily,

The Homeaffairs has asked me to provide evidence of my wife’s English for the second time, given that I have sent them an email regarding my intention to pay the 2nd VAC on 29th April this year via the [email protected] email address.
I appreciate if you could tell me how to expression my intention rather than sending an email to the noreply email address.

          Regards,
          Jinbo

      • admin says:

        Hi Lily,
        That’s very strange!
They should not have actually granted the visa without the VAC invoice unless you actually did meet the English criteria (which might be the case).
You might want to flick the Department an email at [email protected] to raise this, but I”m assuming that you or your partner did actually meet the English criteria without knowing it.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

        • Lily says:

          Hi Hannan
          Thanks for your explanation.
The truth is that my partner neither got an acceptable English test result nor has a degree obtained in English speaking countries.
he does meet any criteria outlined on the website.
I will write to the homeaffairs to raise my concern.
          Thanks

          • SK says:

Its more than 10 working days that I expressed statement for the payment of SVAC, still I have not got invoice. I do not know when I will get that one.

      Hi Hannan,

I got invited and submitted my Visa application on 12 April. Health examinations were done and cleared on 18th April. On 28th of April the case officer sent me s56 request for more information. They need police check from Australia but with old surname. For my family members they only need bridging Visa as our temporary work Visa was expired after we lodge Visa application.

I submitted all the bridging Visas but still wait for police check which may come this week.

      My questions are:
      1. How long to get GTIvisa if I submit police check this week?
      2. Does it mean we met the English language requirements for my wife, as I have submitted her bachelor’s degree including a letter from the university president, where the language of instructions was in English?
      Regards

      Hi Hannan,
Hope you guys are doing great.
      Couple of quick queries.
1: If the entire package including all benefits go up to thresh hold, would that count or it has to be the basic salary?
2: Any of your clients submitting EOI in SEP 2020 got any response yet?
      Would really appreciate your answer.

      Best Regards, Muhammad

      • admin says:

        Hi Muhammad,
        1. Technically the FWHIT is actually base salary (but you can be creative in your argument because the legal requirement is how much you can be expected to earn, not how much you earn); and
        2. Yes we’ve received some invites from Sep 2020, though not all.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

I just get the the invitation two days ago, Finally after 8 months.
I will lodge my application this week,
Is it need to submit a police clearance with the application or after I submit the application they should ask me for police clearance if they need it?
      Thanks

      • admin says:

        Hi Hameed,
        Congratulations on the invite.
You can actually submit your visa without the police clearances, but you should provide them as soon as possible to avoid processing delays.
        Good luck!

    • AA says:

      Hi Admin,

I want to ask you, what is the chance of applying without a nominator?

      Thanks a lot

      • admin says:

        Hi AA,
You can apply for the EOI without the nominator (though not recommended as the Department seems to be asking for evidence of this now).
You should not apply for the visa at all without the nominator.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

    • Jesse says:

      Dear Hannan,

I submitted my EOI application on 25th Sept, 2020, and was wondering if under your observation that not hearing back is common. Is there anything to help with the application at this time?

      Kind Regards,
      Jesse

      • admin says:

        Hi Jesse,
There’s nothing to do to expedite the application unless there are compelling or compassionate circumstances.
We’re seeing movement in September applications now, so that kind of processing time is expected.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

    • VA says:

      Hi admin,

I submitted my EOI on 9th of November 2020 with 6 months to go in my PhD. I have just received reviewer comments on my PhD thesis. They are 4 minor suggestions which I’ll address asap but it might take my University around a month (or so maybe) to give me the award letter. My question is, should I wait for a month or should I tell the department now given that I don’t know when they’ll open my application and I want them to know that I am done with my PhD (or close to it). I mean, technically, its not done yet but is it better to let them know that I have received comments which are minor in nature (I have a University letter saying that the thesis needs changing of minor editorial nature)??

      • admin says:

        Hi VA,
Our position would generally be that there hasn’t been an update in your circumstances so we’d wait until completion.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Stephen says:

      Dear Hannan,
I will graduate this June in China and I have already submitted the EOI in December 2020.
I will get a lecture position in China. My contract salary is about 50,000 Australian dollars per year.
I don’t know if I should submit my job contract to them.
      Best Regards,
      Stephen

      Hi all,

I just received an invitation letter from the department to apply for the GTI visa. At one point, I almost gave up and started to prepare for post-study work visa.
Thanks heaps Hannan for creating this forum. It helped so much while I was waiting.

I would like to share this information with those who are still waiting. Be patient and the news will eventually arrive.

      Here is my timeline:
      Target sector: Medtech
      First EOI: 13 July, 2020
Second EOI: 9 September, 2020. I didn’t know I could update my information via email, so ended up submitting another EOI.
PhD thesis submission: 28 August, 2020
      PhD completion: 2 Feb, 2021
Publications: >20 at the time of EOI submission, including a few conference publications. Also had one in BMJ as the first author and two others with impact factor>7.

Provided a few updates including my completion of PhD and employment. Currently working as a senior data analyst with an annual package of 90k.

      Cheers,
      Polly

      Hi Hannan,
Today I got granted my GTI Visa.

      Kind regards

      • admin says:

        Congrats Omar!
So great to see people on this blog getting their approvals!
        All the best,
        Hannan Tew

      • Dan says:

Big congrats Omar. How long did it take for your visa grant since application submission? Thanks

      • Polly says:

Congratulations Omar. Just wondering if you applied for a bridging visa while you were waiting? I just submitted my visa yesterday. My student visa will expire on August 28. So I am not sure if I should start applying for bridging visa A now. I am afraid my work may be affected if I apply for bridging visa A as it seems there are work restrictions attached to bridging visa A. Just not sure which restriction would be for people who are waiting for 858 visa.

        Cheers,
        Polly

    • BB says:

      Hi Admin and all,
Now, 6 months are remaining to submit my PHD thesis and thinking of asking for a letter from my supervisor. Could you please tell me in what format it should be it. For example, does it need to be detailed containing the thesis topic and exact date of submission or a general comment from my supervisor saying he is my supervisor and i am in the last semester of my PHD is fine. Thanks in advance

      • Omar says:

Yes, they asked for a new police check with my old surname. They also asked to apply for bridging Visa for my family as our temporary work Visa is expired.

    • Edmund says:

Hi Hannah, do you know if the applicant has 2+ haematuria (trace of blood cell) in urine test, will that make their GTI visa or PR visa application get rejected? Thank you.

      • admin says:

        Hi Edmund,
It depends on costing and prejudice to access of the specific condition.
Shoot us an email if you’d like to discuss this further at [email protected]
        Kind regards,

    • James says:

Hi Hannan and team, just wondering if graduating PhD students are still getting invites. I can only see post-docs getting invites these days. Has the policy around PhD (in the last 6 months) changed?

      • BB says:

        Hi James,
My friend who is yet to graduate got invitation in mid-March. He applied in mid july 2020. However, his profile is impressive for his level with 40 plus publication and 300 citation, casual lecturer job.

      • admin says:

        Hi James,
You don’t need any qualification to apply (you need to show international recognition).
There seems to be some confusion where people have assumed that if you are within 6 months from submitting a PhD and in a sector you can get an invitation but that’s not the case. The policy around PhD’s being submitted within 6 months is more in relation to avoiding the FWHIT. To your question, we’ve recently assisted a first year PhD candidate but they had significant achievements regardless of their PhD study. Most academics we assist are post-doc since they have more international recognition.
        Good luck!
        Hannan Tew

Hi Hannah, may I know what kind of supporting documents or evidence of how your settlement in Australia will be an asset to the Australian community we can provide? For evidence of employment prospects in the target sector in Australia, besides some jobs ads, what else can we provide? Thank you for your help.

Hi, I have recently submitted my Ph.D. theses to Hemachandra North Gujarat University of Gujarat, India. I have more than 6 years of work experience as an University Lecturer and that was positively assessed by VETASSESS. Also, I have many scholarly publications in reputed international academic journals. Can I be eligible for GTI visa? It will be appreciated if you kindly assist me in this regard.
      Looking forward to your reply.’
      Thank you.

    • Parry says:

      Hi Hannan,
I got my invite on 10th Feb’21, visa application submitted on 25th Feb’21 , s56 requested document submitted on 31st March’21. Since that application showing “under further assessment” ( since last 6 weeks) and normal processing time written 18-20 months. Is that normal time for taking decision on GTI visa application? Do I need to wait further or require to contact department to know about delay?

      Regards,
      Parry

      • admin says:

        Hi Parry,
You don’t need to contact the Department and normally it doesn’t take that long to process but it could be something as simple as your case worker going on leave.
Just ensure that you submitted the correct and complete documents and then wait for processing.
        Hannan Tew

      • AruN says:

Hi Parry – did you get your visa? How many days after you submitted the s56?

    • Kate says:

      Hi Hannah,
I’m currently studying a PhD in an Australian University and will you submit my thesis within 6 months.
Should I put Doctorate or Masters degree as highest level of qualification?
And is it beneficial to attach a form from the nominator to your EOI? Thank you.
      Kind regards,
      Kate

      • admin says:

        Hi Kate,
Your highest qualification is whatever you have achieved (Masters) and providing the Form 1000 in the EOI application is highly recommended.
        Good luck!
        Hannan Tew

    • VA says:

      Hey admin,

You mention that providing Form 1000 with the application is highly recommended. How about providing it after submitting EOI as an update?

      Thank you
      VA

      • admin says:

        Hi VA,
Yes, we’d recommend you update the Department with a Form 1000 if you haven’t already done so.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Hajati says:

      Hi,
      Thanks for creating this forum.
Just wondering if I can send an EOI for GTI after the first one was rejected.
After waiting for 6 months, a week ago, I received an email and my EOI for GTI Visa was reject. They indicated I didn’t meet the eligibility criteria but didn’t specify which criteria.
Let me provide some information about me. Would you happen to know why it was rejected. Could it because I don’t have a full time job?
      – Have a PhD in information systems (from an Australian University)
      – About 15 publications including high impact journals and A-ranked international conferences
      – Currently working a casual lecturing job at two universities in Australia
I chose the ICT sector coz my education and experience fits there. Should I send another EOI through the education sector?

Thanks in advance for your advice

      • admin says:

        Hi Hajati,
Sorry to hear about your negative outcome.
Good news is you can apply again, but the Department will want some kind of evidence that there has been a substantial change to your circumstances.
We’d need to review your eligibility to advice further, but feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] for an assessment.
        Good luck!

      Hi Hannan,
Thank you very much for your kind guidance about GTI.
I submitted an EOI in data science in October 2020 and waiting for UID/invitation.

I am wondering how to provide proof for functional English? I completed PhD in 2020 at an Australian university within 3 years and 6 months and my wife is in last 6 months of her PhD at an Australian university. Can we submit letters from the university to meet the criteria?

      Thank you
      Anu

    • EK says:

      Hello Hannan Team,

I lodged my GTI visa application on May 17th. In the Immi Account, it currently states that evidence of character history, the section where Police Clearance certificate has to be attached, is the recommended document, not a mandatory one. However, when you click on the description in the Evidence of Character section, it states that anyone who is above 17 and who lived or travelled outside of Australia since the age of 16 and spent 12 months or more outside of Australia, is required to submit a police check.

In your experience with the applications, does the Department have to request that the applicant provide a Police Certificate if the above conditions apply to them, or should the applicant initiate Police Clearance check even before the Department asks them to submit it? For your information, I am an offshore candidate.

      Thank you in advance.

      • admin says:

        Hi EK,
        Character requirements are mandatory.
The Department will request them in due course, but to process your application as fast as possible you should obtain them befoer that.
        Good luck!
        Hannan Tew

    • VA says:

      Hi admin,

Form 1000 (which I am submitting as an update to my EOI) asks if the the person is currently employed and if yes, how much is their salary. I am currently employed as a research officer for an international organization (my EOI highlights this fact that I am employed but I have not mentioned my salary in my EOI) but my salary is quite low as its only one day per week deal. My PhD is almost finished now and I am currently applying for postdocs. Do you think my low salary might go against me? So I am wondering if I am better off not submitting Form 1000 because I will have to highlight my current salary? Any advice would be great

      • admin says:

        Hi VA,
As you not it depends on particular circumstances, but the general advice is you should include a Form 1000 at the EOI stage.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Aarjoo says:

      Hi,
I submitted my EOI on 24th March 2021 under financial services with over 3 years industrial experience in Australia and had a nominator with over 15 years experience and established in the field. I had submitted two reference letters, nomination form, client review and two of my articles that I had published in my sector. I have seen that people have got invitation even within three days of the EOI lodgement. Can I consider it a positive sign that I still haven’t got a rejection email? Any idea on what kind of applications get rejected? Its really the waiting period that is making me anxious.

      Thanks,

      • admin says:

        Hi Aarjoo,
The median processing time is about 6 months, though some applications get processed faster and slower.
Until you have a negative decision, you still have a chance so good luck!
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

I was a clinical microbiologist in a tertiary care hospital for around 5 years and i also have experience of guiding some masters thesis student in my field. I got 3 PHD scholarship in Australian universities and chose to join current one. After i joined this university i got one college top-up scholarship, 2 competitive research grant based on my research and academic excellence. In my PHD i was working on finding treatment for drug resistant bacterial infection and have got some very novel findings on a molecule which acts as an antibiotics. I have presented these findings at conferences and have got great attention from the fellow researchers. Now, i am preparing manuscript on these findings to publish them as full papers. Apart from these i have also worked as reviewers for many reputed international medical journals and editor for 2 reputed international medical journals. With this profile do you have i have any chance to get UID. I am planning to submit my EOI this month. Thanks in advance

I would like to ask you that is it mandatory/recommended to attach form 80 and form 1221 to my application? I couldn’t see the section for these when I attached the docs but I noticed these from the checklist of docs after I lodged my application.
      Thanks in advance.
      Cheers,

Hi Ace, Congrat and best of luck for for visa process. Did you have job with salary above threshold? Because i have seen many people who are still waiting for more than 7 months are have not heard anything. I my self have 35+ publication with 750+ citations, last semester PHD, 4 PHD full scholarship from different Australian university and chose current one. I got 4 competitive research grant on my own and one college additional scholarship. I have supervised 4 masters student and have worked as reviewers for many international journal and academic editor for a few international journals and now waiting for more than 7.5 months. Even my friends who applied after/before me got rejected. I applied in medtech.

    • Sarah V says:

      Hello there,

Should the nominator necessarily be the applicant’s acquaintance?
Which is more advantageous? An independent nominator or an acquaintance nominator?

      Many thanks

      Regards
      Sarah

      • admin says:

        Hi Sarah,
The nominator can be an acquaintance (there’s no advantage either way).
        Good luck!
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

        • Sarah V says:

          Dear Hannan Tew,

Many thanks for this helpful blog. Just found a couple of useful info here.
Is there a chance one’s case be rejected only because the applicant and the nominator did not have any (scientific) collaboration before? Considering all other criteria were fulfilled.

          Sincerely
          Sarah

          • admin says:

            Hi Sarah,
We’ve not seen any applications rejected on the basis of the nominator yet but they should have some national recognition. Scientific collaboration is only required for academic nominators (e.g. business leaders would not usually have this).
            Hannan Tew

            • Jose says:

              Dear Hannan,

Does that mean if I have a nominator from academia , we should have had scientific collaboration before?
Can an academic person with national reputation nominate myself even though we did not have any scientific collaboration before?
              Thanks

              Cheers
              Jose

            • admin says:

              Hi Jose,
You do not need to have worked with your nominator to have them as a nominator.

    • Ayman says:

      Good Morning Admin,

I have submitted my EOI on the 30th of September, 2020 in Med/tech sector, till now I didn’t receive any response from them. According to your expectations, when I should expect a response from them? thanks for your valuable forum.

      • admin says:

        Hi Ayman,
I think the median processing time is about 6-9 months (we’re seeing most of our October clients now get results). Don’t be too stressed about the delay though, it’s hard to tell what’s in the Department’s processes.
In short, stay positive, patient, and hopefully you get a response soon.
        Hannan Tew

    • Ace says:

      Hi NP,
Thanks for your warm regards. I am working as a research associate but below the bar. Little bit more about myself, I lodged eoi June last year before submit my thesis but it came with negative result Feb this year.
I applied again in March after I received degree/job offer and it came with UID.
Wish you the best luck for your application. Cheers

      • Sarah V says:

        Hello Ace,

        Congrats on this!
Did you receive a UID or an invitation code?
Some forums say an invitation code was introduced recently to replace UID. Not sure how accurate this is though.

        Thanks and congrats again.

        Regards,
        Sarah

        • Ace says:

          Hi Sarah,

I can confirm you that it’s invitation code and invitation reference identifier.
From the email, invitation can be used only once and is valid 12 months.
Thanks and all the best for your case.
          Cheers

      Hello Hannan,

Education Agent Counsellor who is practicing as a sole trader in Australia since 2016. Business is profitable but not meeting income threshold criteria. Because business in established in 2016 till now doubling income every year. Is education agent counselor eligible for global talent visa?

      • admin says:

        Hi Sha,
        Thanks for your comment.
We’ll need more detail on what the role of the education counsellor and would look for some kind of innovation you can focus on.
In any case, at first glance we’d say low prospects on the basis of salary (especially as we expect the program to become more challenging with the reduced numbers for the next program year).
Feel free to email us at [email protected] for an assessment.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

        • Florian says:

          Hello Hannan Tew,

For offshore applicants, should the income threshold be met upon starting work in Australia or is this threshold a prospect to be met after a couple of years working in Australia?

          Thank you and regards
          Florian

          • admin says:

            Hi Florian,
Yes, you need to demonstrate you can earn that amount in Australia now (unless you are a recent PhD graduate or within 6 months of submitting your PhD thesis).
            Kind regards,
            Hannan Tew

    • Tony says:

      Hi Hannan,

Can one consider their chance of granting visa are very high after receiving an invitation code and reference identifier? Considering the declared info for EOI were accurate and the nominators do their job ok.

      Cheers
      Tony

      • admin says:

        Hi Tony,
Yes, though you would still be assessed for international recognition usually those who have an invite will be approved their visa unless they fail health or character assessments.
        Good luck!
        Hannan Tew

    • Nuria says:

      Hello,
I sent my EOI in February 2021 and have received rejection. I think it may be because I haven’t finished my PhD yet (although I did provide letter from my PhD program coordinator that said I would submit in 6 months).
      My profile:
      – PhD student in Agricultural sciences (I will submit and defend my thesis in October 2021) in Spain. Currently offshore
      – I was collaborating as a researcher at the University of Melbourne for 9 months (From January to October 2020).
      – 4 Q1 articles published in international journals and have also been cited in internationally recognized journals.
      – 4 communications to national (Spain) and international conferences.
      – All my articles are related to the agri-food sector and food technology.
      – I provided 2 letters of recommendation (one from my thesis supervisor and one from a professor at the University of Melbourne who was my supervisor during my time there).
      – I provided several job offers that fit my profile and complied with FWHIT.
      – Nominator: nationally and internationally recognized professor at the University of Melbourne in the agri-food field.

Do you think that I have not received an invitation now because I have not yet finished my PhD and that once I finish it and send the degree I will receive an invitation or simply I have not received it now because my profile is not good enough?

      Thanks so much in advance!
      Cheers,
      Nuria

      • admin says:

        Hi Nuria,
The Department are much stricter on candidates who have not finished their PhD yet, so it may be the case that you can make a stronger application then. Remember in all cases that simply completing a PhD is not sufficient, you need to show international recognition and achievements.
Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you’d like to discuss further.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

        • Nuria says:

Thanks so much for the response!
Then, the fact that I’ve not finish the PhD may be the reason why I didn’t receive invitation this time.
Regarding international recognition, I have 4 papers in international journals and I was invited by the University of Melbourne to work with them as a researcher.
Could you please tell me if this could prove international recognition and my application will be stronger once I finish the PhD?

          Thanks so much in advance!

    • MA says:

      Thanks,

      • admin says:

        Hi MA,
We generally provide extracts or google scholar pages depending on the value of the articles.
        Kind regards,

    • AH says:

Hi Hannan, does that mean a recent PhD graduate will tick the box ‘no’ on the eoi form where ability of high income threshold is asked? Will not it affect negatively? I mean does not department expect that phd graduate will meet the threshold sooner or later?

      • admin says:

        Hi AH,
As a recent PhD graduate, a candidate doesn’t need to show that they earn at above the FWHIT so it shouldn’t impact you negatively. However, the practicality is that as the program gets more competitive, there are higher quality candidates you are competing against.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Isaac says:

      Hi Hannan,
In the EOI form some fields like employer, current annual salary, evidence of salary are mandatory to submit the form. As a recent graduate how to escape these fields. Thank you for your response on this.

    • Sam says:

      Hi Hannan,
I got my invitation to apply for this visa. Is this mandatory to send passport or visa evidence of the nominator? Because my nominator is not happy to give me his passport. What I can do. Thank you very much.

      • BB says:

        Hi Sam,
I was reading through some comments in expat forum, they were saying they provided the nominators details such as phone number, address but not passport and the case officer never asked for this. One of my friend also did not provide passport but he is still waiting for visa grant. So i do not think it is mandatory. Could you please tell me when you submitted your EOI and your profile? It has been almost 8 months since i submitted my EOI and still have not heard back. Thanks in advance and best of luck for your visa process.

      • admin says:

        Hi Sam,
As best practice we always include the passport to evidence citizenship (along with evidence of their achievements).
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • TAOTAO CAI says:

      Dear Hannan,

I have submitted my 858 visa application on 11th June 2021, and I received a letter from IMMI about my baby’s visa status yesterday. The content of the letter is below.

“ An electronically lodged application for a subclass 858 visa is not an application for a Bridging Visa (BV), therefore CAI, xxx (10 months baby) has not been granted a BV in relation to this application.

Departmental records show that CAI, xxx ‘s currently holds a BV in relation to an application for a subclass Post-Study Work Stream (VC 485) visa.
In the event that CAI, xxx ‘s current visa status changes before this application for a subclass 858 finalised, and he does not hold another Australia visa, CAI, XXX should apply for a Bridging E visa in association with this application.“

My baby’s 485 BV visa is still in effect. Is it means I do not need to do anything if my baby’s 485 BV visa still keep in effect before my 858 visa application finalised and grant the visa? Only if my baby’s 485 BV visa status changed from in effect to invalid before my 858 visa application finalised, I need to apply for the BVE visa for my baby. Do I understand it correctly?

Many thanks for your consideration, hope to hear from your soon.

      Kind regards,
      Taotao

      • admin says:

        Hi Taotao,
If you don’t withdraw your Graduate visa then your baby’s BV related to that will stay in effect during processing. As long as your 858 visa is processed before any outcome on the Graduate visa there is no issue.
If you do withdraw your Graduate visa, then you need to ensure you apply for another BV for your baby to ensure legality (e.g. BVC or BVE).
Feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you’d like to discuss in more detail.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Mike says:

      Dear Hannan,
I know the EOI takes a long time to process. But i also hope your advice on, if one got an invitation, how long it would normally take for the 858 visa to process, based on your extensive experience?

      Thanks

      Mike

    • Alex Trebeck says:

      Hi Hannan,

May I ask is there any EOI invitations approval recently for your customers? And if so, when did they submit their EOIs?

      Regards
      Alex Trebeck

      • admin says:

        Hi Alex,
Our most recent invite was 16 June 2021 for an application lodged on 3 June 2021.
That being said, we have a number of applications pending since October 2020.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

        • Alex Trebeck says:

          Thanks for the info.

One more question, may I ask is there any successful invitations for recent PhD students based on your cases?

          • admin says:

            Hi Alex,
We do have some recent PhD students (but they also hold excellent positions).
            Kind regards,
            Hannan Tew

    • Anand says:

      Hi admin,

While applying for GT visa on immi account, do I need to provide certified copies of the documents or just the scanned copies will do?

      Thanks
      Anand

    • Hello Admin,

Well-done on a good job, I’m currently offshore and my passport expired in April, I’ve actually applied for another one but it would take over a month to get it in my country

Can I submit EOI with my expired passport while I wait for the renewal and I’ll update as soon as it comes because I’ve seen here that EOI can be updated

      • admin says:

        Hi Oyewele,
The EOI isn’t a visa application so there is no legal requirement to have an updated passport. The Department could choose to reject your EOI if they find that you do not have a valid passport when they decide your application but in any case that point you could resubmit. Without having any experience in this, we think you should be able to submit with your expired passport number and update the Department later.
        Good luck!
        Hannan Tew

    • David Platt says:

      Dear Hannan,

May I ask the current process for the 2020 October applicants based on your cases?

      Best,

      David Platt

      • admin says:

        Hi David,
The majority of our October cases have now been processed so if you lodged then you should hear soon.
        Good luck!
        Hannan Tew

        • David Platt says:

I submitted it on Oct 19 2020 in DigiTech Sector. But still, nothing heard till now. Does it mean my EOI is not invitated?

          • admin says:

            Hi David,
You will definitely hear from the Department if you are unsuccessful (assuming your email address was recorded correctly).
If you haven’t heard, you’ve still got a shot!
            Good luck!
            Hannan Tew

            • David Platt says:

Some of my friends, who submitted in late October, are also waiting for the EOI outcome. It seems that the department has temporally frozen the processing. May I ask is there any outcome for your customers who submitted in late October, especially in the DigiTech sector?

            • admin says:

              Hi David,
Things have certainly slowed down, but we do have invites from October.
In any case, all we can do is be patient at this stage.
              Kind regards,
              Hannan Tew

      Hi,
I am a Corporate Banker with 16 years of experience and working in Singapore for last 11 years. Have managed a team of 10 ppl in the past, received 2 awards from Asset HK on my deal structure and recently completed CPA Australia (after doing my MBA and ACA 16 years ago). I do meet the salary requirements too. What are the chances for a banking professional like me to get a GTI nomination.

      • admin says:

        Hi Vijay,
Sounds like you should have a reasonable prospect of success (depending your specific circumstances).

What is the planning level for GTI in 2021-2022?

    • Laith says:

Dear Team, Thank you so much for the great info and assistance. very appreciable

I would like to ask a few questions and kindly asking if you can answer me

1- I hold a student visa in Australia which will expire in March 2023, However, I will finish my Ph.D. this October 2021 after that I will start a research position at the university. will my visa stay active until 2023? or I have to apply for another visa? what visa do you recommend?

2- I plan to apply for an EOI of Global Talent visa after I finish my Ph.D. Can I apply if I hold a bridging visa or I should have another visa?

3- 3- I applied for an EOI of Global Talent visa before, and I got rejected. The department at that time asked me if I don’t provide them with the completion letter of my Ph.D. in two weeks, they will decline my EOI.
Should I mention that to them when I apply again? do you think that would help in the process of a new application?

      • admin says:

        Hi Laith,
If you PhD finishes that far in advance of your Student visa expiry, yes the Department can take steps to cancel your Student visa if you do not switch over to another visa within a reasonable time (e.g. a Graduate visa).
You can apply for the GTI whilst holding a Bridging visa or other visa.
If you’d like to discuss this further, please contact us at [email protected]
        Kind regards,

    • Kim Chan says:

Hi Hannan, do we need to provide the copy of my nominator’s passport to Home Affairs Department for checking at any stage? Thanks.

      Best,
      Kim

      • admin says:

        Hi Kim,
It’s best practice to provide evidence of the nominator’s citizenship / residence.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

        • Kim Chan says:

Thanks Hannan. What would be the possible evidence other than passport?

          • admin says:

            Hi Kim,
You can provide a VEVO check, an Australian citizenship certificate, or a visa grant (depending on their circumstances).
            Good luck!
            Hannan Tew

    • VA says:

      Hey admin,

Have you seen any movement in the November applications? Also, in your experience, is data science the most busy sector (application wise), and hence the department takes alot of time time to process them?

    • Naser says:

      Dear Hannan,
I have submitted my EOI of Global Talent visa 4 months ago, however I did not get any feedback. Although I know about various times to receive feedback of the home affairs, l would be grateful if you could assist me about estimated time that I should wait to get the result.
      Thank you in advance

      • admin says:

        Hi Naser,
It’s usually taking 6-9 months if your application is not expedited.
        Good luck!

      Hey admin,

Have you seen any movement in the October/November applications?
Also, in your experience, is data science the most busy sector, and hence the department takes alot of time time to process them?

      • admin says:

        Hi Kim,
Most of our early October applications have been processed, but the late ones are still pending.
We do expect processing to pick up over the next few weeks.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

    • Kumar says:

      Hi admin,
I submitted my 858 application 14 days back after receiving the UID. The application status still shows received. Also, I got an email saying that a bridging visa application can be lodged within 2 days after my submission. Is it common for everyone? I am presently on 482 and have another one year valid visa period.

      Thanks
      Kumar

      • admin says:

        Hi Kumar,
Unlike many other visas, Bridging Visas are not automatically granted by legislation for onshore 858 applicants
Notwithstanding this, sometimes the Department does grant the BVA (likely through a manual process).
In any case, it’s probably not required for you since you still have a substantive visa valid for one year, but to be on the safe side you should just manually obtain a BVA through your immi account.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

        • Kumar says:

          Hi admin,
So going through your reply, I understand that I might have received this Bridging Visa because of my residence address. The email received addressed to my offshore address as I mentioned ‘usual country of residence’ as my home country instead of Australia. Should I change my address to an Australian address, I am here in Australia for the last 2 years.
          Thanks
          Kumar

          • Kumar says:

            Hi admin
In continuation to my previous message, I also added my family members (wife and 2 kids) along with this application, and they were automatically granted Bridging Visa but when I checked VEVO, they are still on 482.
So again the question is… this might happen because of family or the offshore address. So what should be the ‘usual country of residence’ for the address?
            Thanks
            Kumar

    • Mike says:

      Dear Hannan,

Do you have any new visa grants since the new fiscal year? Is there a slow down of 858 visa processing speed?

      Thanks

      Mike

      • admin says:

        Hi Mike,
We haven’t had any issues with visa processing (but EOI’s did slow down towards the end of the year).
Anecdotally, once health and character is completed most visas take less than a week to process.
        Good luck!

      Dear All,
I am going to submit my PhD in 31 December 2021. To commence my PhD, I was awarded an Australian Government Scholarship. I also got few other international scholarship. Besides, I have 40 plus publication and I am a reviewer of some of the top journals in digital communication. Now I am in last semester of the PHD.
My Nominator is an Australian citizen, Should I submit my EOI for GTI now or after the thesis submission?
Another question is What should be the expected salary in Form1000 while the candidate start job in Australia?
I am asking this question because my nominator suggests 90k to 100k per Annam, which is much lower than the threshold income level for GTI.
I will be grateful if you kindly answer my questions. Thanks in advance.
      Regards,
      Imtiaz

      • admin says:

        Hi Imtiaz,
You can submit your EOI now and with processing times, update it with your PhD completion evidence when you get it.
As a recent graduate you are also exempt from the FWHIT so it’s okay that your nomination form has a salary below the FWHIT (though of course you are still competing with other applicants so the higher the better).
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

        • Imtiaz Ahmed says:

          Dear Hannan,

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

          Hi, Hannan,
I’ve already submitted my PhD thesis, but haven’t got the completion letter yet.
So, when I apply for the EOI, do I select the option “PhD” for “highest level qualification”? And do I select the option “No” for the question “Are you currently a PhD student”?
Meanwhile, how do I update information like my PhD completion letter?

          Thanks very much!
          Best,
          Rosen

          • admin says:

            Hi Rosen,

      Hi Hannan,

Is norminator necessary during EOI stage? I submitted my application last December off-shore without attaching any norminator information. Will no-norminator be a reason to be closed or pending?

      best,
      Charlie

      • admin says:

        Hi Charlie,
It’s highly recommended but not essential (we often see requests for the nominator form).
In any case, you will receive a notification if your application is unsuccessful.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

Today I submit my documents for Global Talent Visa. Unfortunately I forget to upload my CV and first page of my publications. How can I send these documents?

    • Alyaa says:

      Dear Team,
      Thanks for the great cooperation,

I got rejected a year ago for my EOI of Global Talent visa. The department at that time asked me if I don’t provide them with the Ph.D. completion letter in two weeks, they will reject my EOI.
Currently, I have a Ph.D. with strong points such as 40+ publications, 70+ reviews, 3 awards during the Ph.D., and I got a position at one of the Australian universities.

Should I mention that I got rejected before to the department when I apply again?
do you think that would help in the speed of the process of a new application?

      • admin says:

        Hi Alyaa,
I don’t think it will speed things up if you mention that you were rejected last time, but you should certainly apply again with your new profile!
        All the best!

      Hai,
I have 4 international publication, 3 international Conference. 1 conference award. 1 innovation patent. All related to circular economy. My doubts are:
What is the chance I get GTI through circular economy?
If so, How can I find a nominator in Circular economy?
      Thanks in advance.

      • admin says:

        Hi Aysh,
The relatively low publications will make it a challenge, but certainly worth an effort.

    • Muhammad Adeel says:

      Hi team,
Could you please suggest if it is ok to apply for another visa while waiting for the outcome of EOI. For example, can you apply for a temporary graduate visa (485), and lodge your assessment application for the visa category ( e.g., 191, 189, 491 )? Please suggest.

      Best,
      Muhammad

      • admin says:

        Hi Muhammad,
Yes, it’s totally fine to apply for another visa process whilst your GTI EOI is pending. In fact, we encourage you keep your options open since the GTI EOI is not a guarantee. The only thing you should consider is that you do not provide false or misleading information.
        Good luck!
        Hannan Tew

    • Ahmed says:

      Dear Hannan,
I appreciate your effort and patience in responding to questions. Would you mind letting me know regarding the movements in November applicants?
      Sincerely.

      • admin says:

        Hi Ahmed,
There’s been a slow down but most of our applicants from October have now been processed so November ones should be moving along soon.
        Good luck,

        Hi Ash,
The Department is currently processing applications submitted in October so you should hear from them very shortly.
        Good luck!

      Hi Admin,

Regarding question 18 of form 1000, could you please let me know how I should calculate the current annual salary?
I am wondering if the current annual salary means the amount of salary paid to me during the 12 months immediately prior to lodge the visa application (salary for my previous job) or I need to provide current annual salary based on my new contract?

      Your help is much appreciated.

    • Jain says:

      Hi Admin,

I submitted my EOI in Feb 2021. I didn’t submit a nominator with my EOI. I have now received a request from the authorities for the form 1000. Do I consider this as a good sign?

      Thank you!

    • NG says:

Have you come across applicants who are just waiting for their health assessments to be done, however the assessment gets postponed due to the ongoing lockdowns?

Do you know if immigration has any plans to skip the health assessment altogether given the current scenario/wait time?

      Thanks for your time.

      • admin says:

        Hi NG,
Yes, there’s quite a few instances of people who are stuck on health examinations but there is no way to skip the health assessment at this point in time.
Unfortunately you’ll just have to wait until BUPA re-opens in your location.

      Dear Admin,

I submitted my EOI for 858 few weeks ago. Now i want to update my EOI with some additional information. Unfortunately, I submitted with an old form 1000 (dec 2020 form but it has recently been modified). Is it wise to update the EOI because I have heard that CO may not like it that why such information was not provided at first instance. Also, I need to provide some more information about my nominator role (actually, i provided everything about him but forgot to attach evidence about his role as author of books). Wondering if it would be a good idea to update my EOI or should i submit a new one? If I have to update my EOI, can you please let me know the email to which i need to send this updated info? Thank you

      • admin says:

        Hi escallanio,
Whilst it’s not the best strategy to continuously update the Department, you should definitely update the Department if there has been some improvement or in your case, you’ve forgotten key documents.
You can email the Department through [email protected]
        Good luck with your application!

      Hi
My husband wants to apply for this visa; he meets all the requirements.
However, I’m a sponsored student by my government, and I heard if you’re sponsored student by a foreign government, you must leave Australia for at least two years or get a release letter from your sponsor.

      Is that correct?

      Regards

      Miriam

      • admin says:

        Hi Miriam,
To avoid 5010 your husband will need to demonstrate that either (a) the course was designed to be undertaken over a period of less than 12 months or (b) you have spent at least 2 years outside Australia since ceasing the course or (c) there are compelling or compassionate reasons that impact the interests of Australia or an Australian citizen / permanent resident / eligible New Zealand residents which convince the Minister that you should be able to apply for the visa.
Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you’d like further clarification.

          Dear Hannan
Thank you for your promote answer.
Is it enough to get a release letter from my sponsor? To say that they don’t mind my staying in Australia!
Or, can my husband apply for this visa alone while I’m overseas for two years?
          Thanks again

    • June says:

      Dear Admin,

I submitted my EOI in Feb 2021, and updated them with some new publications in April. But I only put my full name and passport number in the email title and didn’t reiterate in the email nor my document. My friend told me need to name each supplementary documents with passport number as well. Is that correct? Or have the passport number in the title of email already enough.

      Thanks a lot.

      • admin says:

        Hi June,
There is no specific format for the Department to attach the documents to your file as long as they have relevant information (i.e. a passport number and your full name).
If those details in the email title that should be enough to connect the documents to your case.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

      Dear Hannan,
I have submitted my EOI (Agri-food sector) on 9th December 2020 and provided further supporting documents on 19th and 28th April, and 21th July 2021. I did not provide nominator details when I submitted my EOI because it was not mandatory at the time. I could to find an Australian citizen as a nominator and then I sent you my nominator details and Form 1000 to the Department. I still waiting for more than 8 months are have not heard anything. How long does it take to get a response from my EOI?

      • admin says:

        Hi Rouhollah,
Currently applications are being processed from October 2021.
I note that a nominator is highly recommended as we have seen some instances where the Department doesn’t issue an EOI without it. Depending on the specifics of your work, you could try Engineers Australia or ACS.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

        • Rouhollah says:

Thank you Hanna. I sent my nominator details and Form 1000 to the Department 3 weeks ago through [email protected]. I have updated my EOI several times, however, I did not get any feedback. How can I ensure that the global talent officer has considered further documents?

          • admin says:

            Hi Rouhollah,
The Department won’t give you feed back, but the fact that you’ve submitted it (with your identifiers) means that they should be able to connect it to your application.
            Good luck,
            Hannan Tew

    • DK says:

      Hi Admin

I am a Ph.D. first-year student with a research area closely related to CyberSecurity. I have also finished my Masters of CyberSecurity(With a 25% scholarship) in 2019 from Australian University with 75 WAM. Have a previous Master in Research from my home country. Have about 7-8 years of experience as Assistant Professor and positive University lecturer assessment back in 2015 (Can renew it). Now working as a sessional Academic at Australian University.
Publications are very few at the moment 2 Journal Publication, 1 more submitted but waiting for acceptance. 1 Conference publication.
What are the chances of applying for GTI. Or I should wait until end of PhD

      • admin says:

        Hi DK,
Unfortunately at first glance your prospects appear fairly low (in comparison to the profiles of our successful applicants).
Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you’d like to discuss eligibility in more detail.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

Hi there – I completed my PhD in Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in the USA in August 2019. I am currently working at a well known research institute in data analytics.
      1) Do I need to submit my EOI within 3 years of completing my PhD (Aug 2022) or is it the visa application that needs to be submitted within 3 years?
      2) Should I apply for my GTV under a profession (Data Scientist) or under Research and Academia category?
      Thank you!

    • Ahmed says:

      Hi dear Hannantew,

Would you mind letting me know if there is any movement in November 2020 applicants?

      Kind regards.

    • Masoume says:

      Hi Hannan Tew,
Somebody generally receives an invite within 1-2 months. there seem to be two queues for GTI. How can I fall into the “expedited” queue?

      Thanks

      • admin says:

        Hi Masoune,
Usually people who are processed faster are those who have been contacted by the Department or are of exceptional talent.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Anna says:

      Hi Hannan,
I have submitted my EOI in last week of March 2021 with a PhD under “Resources” from overseas. I didn’t receive any response yet. In last 5 months I have published two more papers and gained additional 100 citations on my google scholar account. Should I update my CV and send to the email address ([email protected])? Or the officers will look into my google scholar account and LinkedIn as I provided these links.

Does passport bio page of nominator play any crucial role? As passport is a confidential document. the nominator will not agree to provide for sure. Though passport of nominator is not mandatory to upload in the EOI form, but would that hamper my application?

Another question is for my friend. He is in Australia and will complete his PhD in next 6 months from “medicine related research sector”. Is the homeaffairs still inviting candidate who is on last 6 month of their Phd from onshore?
What should he select as his status in his PhD course: (a) Currently studying PhD (b) Met PhD course requirements, awaiting conferral
He didn’t submit his thesis yet, but will submit in next 3/4 month. He met all the requirements other than thesis submission.

      Thank you very much.

      • admin says:

        Hi Anna,
To your first question, yes you can definitely update the Department on account of your additional citations and updates.
To your other questions, they are quite broad, so feel free to email us at [email protected] to discuss further with one of our lawyers.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Dave says:

      Hi Hannan,
My question is about how strict the salary threshold is. Working in Fintech for 5 years, my contract’s base salary doesn’t quite reach the threshold but the total compensation package is always well above. Would that be taken into account?
      Thanks

      • admin says:

        Hi Dave,
Your current salary is not the only indicator of your earnability (e.g. if you are a start-up founder it might be the case that you are getting a low salary for future gains).
The point you need to demonstrate is your ability to earn at above the FWHIT. Feel free to get in touch with us at [email protected] if you’d like to discuss your circumstances further.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Evelyn says:

      Hi Hannah,

Thank you for providing information. I have been contacted to provide further information (internationally recognized achievements) for my EOI application. Do you have any idea about how long I should be expecting their reply after I sent them the required materials? Do they give results accept/reject directly?

Thanks. Looking forward to your reply.

      • admin says:

        Hi Evelyn,
That’s good news – you just need to ensure that you now provide complete information in the response.
The Department usually makes a decision within 1-2 weeks of that response.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Rashed says:

      Hi Hannan

      Your explanation is really good!
My one question, I am an international student doing now Ph.D. in Australia and I am in the last semester, I am totally working in the Energy field (Ph.D. and M.Sc) and I will submit the thesis within the next 6 months, I have published 30 more papers and my google scholar citation above 1200!

Am I eligible to apply for GTI according to new rules, if I apply how many days it will take to get the outcome?

      • admin says:

        Hi Rashed,
You meet the base eligibility, though they do scrutinise PhD candidates more than PhD gradutes so you need to show that your research is exceptional.
Generally the processing time is about 6-9 months (though can be shorter or longer).
        Good luck!
        Hannan Tew

        • Rashed says:

          Hi Hanna

Thank you so much for your kind reply!

I got like this information, that is applied from 15th of August…

From 15th August 2021, Ph.D. students are no longer for invitation solely on the basis of a Ph.D. thesis being submitted,/ will submit in the next six months, we continue to consider Ph.D. graduates from the past three years.

          is that true or not?

          thanks
          Rashed

          • admin says:

            Hi Rashed,
It’s not really a change (though it’s written that way). The point is that PhD graduates and students are not eligible for the GTI visa on the basis of their qualifications alone (and this has been the case for some time practically as those applicants do not get invited). You need to show international recognition in addition to just your qualifications. In this way, it’s not compulsory to complete a PhD for the GTI program (you just need to show international recognition). The main consideration with the PhD is that if you didn’t complete it in the last three years, then you do need to demonstrate a salary above the FWHIT.
            Kind regards,
            Hannan Tew

    • Hossein says:

      Hi Dear,
I completed my PhD course five years ago. I have published 70 more papers, including 30 peer-reviewed journal articles in the highly cited journals and over 40 conference papers. Also I have an Australian nominator for this program and I am still prominent in my field of expertise. In automatic message form [email protected], there was mentioned: to be eligible, PhD graduates must have their PhD degree conferred in the last 3 years in order to satisfy the requirement to still be prominent in their area of academia and research at the time of application.
I have submitted my EOI in December 2020 and I did not get any feed back. Am I eligible to apply for GTI according to new rules?

      • admin says:

        Hi Hossein,
It’s not compulsory to complete your PhD in the last 3 years (you don’t even need a PhD – you just need to show international recognition). However, if you haven’t completed your PhD in the last three years, then you do need to demonstrate a salary above the FWHIT.

      Thank you Poly for writing.
Its give me hope and heads up.
I am currently a Postdoctoral research fellow in South Africa with 8 papers published(during and after PhD completion in 2020) and 3 papers accepted on the on-going Postdoc position). I intend to apply for the GTI streams.
What’s my eligibility for the GTI streams

      • admin says:

        Hi Grace,
Your eligibility will depend on (among other things) the quality of your research (e.g. citations and impact factor), your current position, and other international awards / recognition you have received. Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you’d like one of our lawyers to undertake an assessment.

        Hi Alex,
Not all, but some of our October cases are still waiting a decision.
These are the matters (unless expedited) which are currently being processed.

Hi, this was my experience (Financial services & FinTech target sector):

      EOI Submitted 30-th June 2020
Requiest for further informtion 10-th March 2021
Invitation to apply 26-th March 2021
      Documents submitted 7-th April 2021
Visa received 23-rd of April 2021

Keep in mind medical checks may take quite a bit of time in metro areas because of Covid, and BUPA website is not very user friendly for choosing the closest date available. I suggest you call severeal regional hospitals in the BUPA list and arrange your checks outside metro area, that saved me about 2 months.

      Good luck!

      Hi,

I am finishing my PhD in November. I received an offer from an Australian company. They suggest I apply for visa 482 to enter Australia. Can I apply for both visas 482 and 858 at the same time? Thanks!

      Best regards,

      • admin says:

        Hi Thanh-Hai,
Yes absolutely, you can apply for the 482 visa whilst going through the GTI EOI program.
If you get a GTI invite, then it’s worth considering which visa application you want to pursue as at that stage though you can lodge both visa applications, you would also have to pay two government fees. Feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you’d like further information.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Tos says:

      Hello,

Please is there any clear directive from the government regarding waiving the date of first entry requirement for GTI visa grant recipients due to Covid 19?

Most of the information I have come across online are vague on this matter.

      Thanks

      • admin says:

        Hi Tos,
The most up to date information is here.
In general, the Department will be leniant on first entry date travel whilst COVID-19 restrictions are in place.
Once things open up, you may need to go through an older process of obtaining approval from the Department if you miss out on your first entry date.
Your best bet is to check with an immigration professional when you are ready to travel (you can contact us at [email protected] if you’d like our advice).
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

I’m a Software Engineering professional hoping to apply for GTI under the Digital Health sector(formerly MedTech)

What would be the most relevant Australian organization to get a nomination for Digital Health?

I’ve checked these and could not find a proper match:
      1) Australian Computer Society (ACS) – They have not listed Digital Health under the sectors they support
      2) Engineers Australia – They list all engineering sectors
      3) Australian Digital Health Agency – This is the most relevant as I see, but they do not mention a nomination process.

      • admin says:

        Hi Jay,
You can try a number of employers within the sector, or https://www.mtaa.org.au/
Remember not all organisations will agree to nominate, so you can also consider individuals with national recognition within the space.
        Kind regards,

    • escallanio says:

      Hi Hannan

I have concern about the nominator. I submitted my EOI last month. My nominator was professor in a well-reputed university of Australia but lost it due to COVID early this year. The nominator is currently an academic dean of Academies Australasia Polytechnic (AAPoly- a college/chain of colleges) but works as Adjunct/Honorary professor of two Australian universities (including the previous one). He has an exceptional track record and well-reputed in my area of research and also we have multiple research papers together. Do you think I need to change the nominator as he is no longer a permanent university Professor? I can opt for a senior lecturer though (someone at my current level but his research profile is way below the level of AAPoly dean). Any suggestion in this regard based on your vast experience?
      Thanks

      • admin says:

        Hi Escallanio,
If he is currently a Dean and holds Adjunct / Honorary Professor titles then the argument can still be made that his achievements are still current and therefore he is still an appropriate nominator.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Safa says:

      Hi Hannan tew,
I have a question about the Increased flexibility for citizenship applicants for people with distinguished talen Visa including Global Talent Visa.

I am living in Australia since 2010 but I was overseas from 01 November 2017 to 18 April 2019. Then from this date I am still in Australia. I was granted a global talent visa on 13 May 2021, which is a permanent residency. I worked at Australian university as a researcher for 2 years and I will work in another Australian university in next two weeks.

I have seen some news in the immigration website on 14 September 2021 about Increased flexibility for citizenship applicants for people with distinguished talen Visa including Global Talent Visa.

      https://minister.homeaffairs.gov.au/AlexHawke/Pages/increased-flexibility-citizenship-applicants.aspx

It was mentioned in the immigration department website that (The special residence requirement provides that an applicant has held a valid visa for the last four years, living in Australia for at least 480 days during that time, and must have been a permanent resident and in Australia for 120 days in the year immediately before applying).

I can meet all the requirements such as 120 days as a permanent resident and already lived in Australia for 480 days since 18 April 2019.

My question is: I didn’t understand what they mean by having a valid visa for the last 4 years?. If I have a valid visa for the last 4 years then there is no need for special residency.

      Kind regards

      • admin says:

        Hi Safa,
To your question, the special residency requirement reduces the number of days required from the general residency requirement. Both require that you held a valid visa at least 4 years ago, but there are reduced physical periods in Australia for the special residency requirement. In any case, though there is no legislation yet, the Minister’s announcement indicates “the special residence requirement will now also apply to past, present and future distinguished talent stream visa holders.” That is, it does not seem to indicate it will include Global Talent stream holders. We’ll post an update when the legislation is released.
        Kind regards,
        Hannan Tew

    • Safa says:

      Hi Admin,

Thank you very much for your clarification.

Please if this special residency requirements include Global Talent Visa 858 then am I eligible to apply for citizenship early?

The first entering date to Australia is on 28 June 2010. But on 01 November 2017 I went overseas and back to Australia on 18 April 2019 to start working as a research scientist for two years. Since 18 April 2019 I am still in Australia.

So, if I want to calculate a valid Visa for the last 4 years from today then it will be from 27 September 2017 to 27 September 2021 which includes absent period from 01 November 2017 to 18 April 2019 (17.5 months).

Thanks again to sharing your experience.

      Regards

      Hi Hannah,
I’m very curious about this waiting time. My wife applied in March under education sector with a form 1000 nominated by a distinguished Prof. in her field as a chemical engineering. She later realised that her area of specialization as a recent PhD best fit in resources sector. She sends email through the gti website provided informing them to change it from education to resources. How would she know if they have change? Can she send another email to ask if they have really changed the sector? We realized that more attention is given to resources than education with her current profile. The second question, what is time frame of rejection at EOI stage? Is long waiting for Uid a good sign as an offshore applicant? I was told that if someone EOI application has been delayed for more than 3 months without rejection, the person’s EOI application can still receive UiD because they easily reject EOI application now if someone doesn’t meet their criteria and eligibility. I don’t know how true was that,
      Thanks

      • admin says:

        Hi Alara,
The Department won’t confirm that they have received an update (apart from the auto email) but you can assume they have received any correspondence you have emailed them.
Re the processing time, it can be 10-12 months now due to the high level of cases so I wouldn’t put too much thought into that.
        Good luck,
        Hannan Tew

Sounds like you have a reasonable prospect.
Re nominator, you might be able to consider ACS or Engineers Australia (EA).

      Dear Admin,

Hi. I am interested to submit EOI for 858. I have PhD in Computer science (major in cybersecurity) from UTS Australia in 2016, and an MS degree from UK. Currently, I am an assistant professor (Equivalent to Level C) with a salary way below the threshold (typical salaries in low-income countries but I had recently been shortlisted for an australian university as senior lecturer position, though i was not selected due to my visa status). I have more than 55 journal publications and 9 conference papers (most of them in highly ranked journals in top-ranked australian core ranking) with a commulative impact factor of 350+, 1800 citations, h-index of 20 and 80+ reviews on publons. I have been general chair, session chair, workshop chair for a number of international conferences, edited 2 books, awardee of numerous prestigious scholarships during PhD (4 different awards), editor for various journals, invited for various talks in my field of research at international level, 4 research projects/grants at international level, visiting professor of 2 foreign universities, and have a start-up as well (though at an early stage). May I know if i have any prospect to submit EOI?

Also, the september newsletter states that “A senior academic and researcher appointment at Australian Academic Level D or E, or their international equivalents in fields other than Education, may be considered an indicator of internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in the Education sector. Candidates should provide evidence of publications, citations, patents, awards and/or other accolades.”. How do you interpret it? does it mean anyone below academic level D is not eligible?

      • admin says:

        Hi Marjan,
        Thanks for reaching out.
The EOI program does give case officers a wide discretion and there are cases of people outside of the guidelines who get invites (and conversely, people within guidelines who don’t).
Re the requirement for an Academic Level D or E, that is specifically for people applying for the Education sector.
As a Computer Scientist you wouldn’t be applying under the Education sector in which case you can still apply as a Assistant Professor.
Feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you’d like to discuss further.

      Dear Hannan/Admin,

I have a question. I expressed my interested for GTI in July 2020 which got rejected citing the changed rules (based on the education qualification) from January 2021. In the rejection email, they have advised me to re-apply after I receive my PhD degree. I received my PhD degree recently in August this year and currently working as a postdoc. I submitted my EOI in August 2021 including all the necessary documents (Form 1000, employment contract, publications (7), awards and conferences). Currently, I am on a student (Subclass 500) visa which expires in Jan 2022, which means I need to get a temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) in the next couple of months. Can you please let me know your experience in this case, and if there is a way to expedite the process? I will sincerely appreciate your guidance here. Thank you.

      • admin says:

        Hi Vinay,
You can write to the Department inbox and request an expedited visa on compelling and compassionate reasons, but it does not appear that you have any.
The most appropriate action for you is likely to apply for and obtain the Graduate visa so you can ensure your continued stay in Australia.
        Good luck,

We don’t think that multiple Form 1000’s help, but there is no harm updating the Department with the ACS Form 1000 if your previous nominator was not as “nationally recognised”.
        Good luck,
